Every October, Red Hook Open Studios (RHOS) brings artists and art lovers into the tucked-away artist studios of Red Hook.
This year, Red Hook Business Alliance is partnering with RHOS, BWAC, and the Waterfront Museum to bring 4 screenings of films by or about Red Hook to this special weekend. What better way to end an art-full day in Red Hook than a movie?

"Wood Hood" by Andy Isaacson
DeVaughn is a 15-year-old kid from New York City who loves skateboarding and craves a "quiet place" to escape the chaos of his home, the city, and kids that steal from him. The film follows DeVaughn on a weekend-long group camping trip with Camping to Connect, a BIPOC-led mentorship program that teaches leadership, brotherhood, and inclusion in the outdoors. "These kinds of conversations are rare for men that look like us," one leader states, and as the film weaves between the city and the woods, a space that is unfamiliar and historically inaccessible to these kids, we witness the joy and growth that is possible when kids have an opportunity to find that "quiet place." Our documentary will bring attention to those struggling with ongoing mental health issues and those that use substances as a form of self-medicating in hopes of coping with said issues. We’ll reflect on where this abuse stems from, how it directly impacts both addicts and those around them. “Chew on This!” By Red Hook Initiative Freedom School Scholars
Pioneer Works’ K-12 Education offered a documentary film program for RHI's Freedom Schools 9th and 10th grade students enrolled in their program. Over the 6 weeks, students produced the short documentary film. “Chew on This!” focuses a critical lens on the American school lunch system. From conception to post production, the project was 100% student-led with guidance from local film makers Victorious De Costa and Monica Torres-Ortiz. | 10 minutes *

“Overgrown Red Hook” by Julia Rosenheim
”Overgrown Red Hook” is a short docu-poem about the abundance of plant life in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The film draws upon traditions of street photography and poetry to record how plants show up in unexpected places, sometimes overtaking sidewalks or subsuming manmade objects. Industrial sections of a neighborhood reveal themselves to be teeming with botanical diversity. The film offers a complicated and hopeful picture of life finding its way up through cracks in the concrete. | 3 minutes
